Degrees and Requirements

The Bachelor of Arts Degree

Religious Studies is a bachelors degree; there are no graduate programs in RELS. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies is awarded through the College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Oklahoma. The degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, of which 48 hours must be at the upper division level (courses numbered at the 3000 or 4000 level). The Religious Studies major requires 36 hours, of which 21 must be upper division (courses numbered at the 3000 or 4000 level).  Our major is divided into five groups, in a preferred sequence, and the first two groups may be completed with 15 hours of lower division course work, providing options for freshmen and sophomores to making progress towards the degree.  For more information, see the "Requirements for the Major" and the checksheet for Groups I and II.

Students in the Religious Studies Program are also eligible to (and encouraged to) minor in fields both inside and outside the College of Arts and Sciences and/or combine other programs for a double major.

Religious Studies as a Second or Dual Degree or Double Major with a program in another OU College

A double major with Religious Studies and another A&S program is an option exercised by most students in the RELS program.  In addition, the College of International and Area Studies and the Gaylord College of Journalism have an agreement with the College of Arts & Sciences, and students in those colleges may complete a double major in RELS along with their major programs, without the requirement of a dual degree (150 hours).

Students with undergraduate degrees already in hand may earn a second undergraduate degree by completing the requirements for the RELS major, A&S College language requirements, and the A&S College General Education requirements.

Current students majoring in a program outside the College of Arts & Sciences may complete the requirements of the Religious Studies major, A&S College language requirements, and A&S College General Education requirements to earn a simultaneous dual degree in Religious Studies along with the original degree program. Dual degrees across Colleges require 150 hours. They may also complete the RELS minor without exceeding the minimum number of hours required for their bachelors degree.
